My Burden is Light

There are no street lamps in Virginia. Tree-lined roads become creepy avenues of darkness once the sun goes down, and my desire to travel them is extinguished. This transformation makes me think about the qualities of light, especially those of safety and warmth.

A few weeks ago, my companion showed me a new interpretation of Christ's invitation to take his yoke upon us for his "burden is light" (Matthew 11:30; emphasis added).  There are two meanings to that: 1. weight, and 2. energy. The first refers to a physical burden partially lifting, which I've felt as I've asked for Christ's grace in accomplishing tasks. His power is very real.

The second meaning—that of energy—is also full of power. Christ is "the light of the world," and He told us that "I am the light which ye shall hold up—that which ye have seen me do" (John 8:12; 3 Nephi 18:24). That is our burden; our burden is to hold Light up—to hold Christ up, and to be not ashamed (Romans 1:16). I hope I do my part to Light the world and draw people to Christ, for that is my burden—and I accept it gladly.
