The Inspiration in Music

I was on exchanges (basically hanging out) with an older sister in the mission when I first heard this hymn. We were driving along autumn-lined avenues in Burke, Virginia, and this song drifted over me with all the love and charity with which it was written. Sister B— started singing along, and these were the words:

Brightly beams our Father's mercy
From his lighthouse evermore,
But to us he gives the keeping
of the lights along the shore.

Those words convinced me that while God watches over all of His children, we are an integral part of the work. That is in harmony with my belief that most prayers are answered through other people. We have a responsibility to love everyone, and this is the lesson of this beautiful music.
I love what the Church's Hymnbook says about the power of song:
"Some of the greatest sermons are preached by the singing of hymns. Hymns move us to repentance and good works, build testimony and faith, comfort the weary, console the mourning, and inspire us to endure to the end" (Worship through Music).
I am so grateful for music. It does miracles in our life, and it invites the inspiration of the spirit into our lives.
