Sacrifice and Consecration

What is the difference between sacrifice and consecration?

I have always been taught that sacrifice is giving up something good for something better (Sacrifice). I've sacrificed sleep for school, for work, or for scripture study. I've sacrificed money for items I valued. I've sacrificed time for people I cared about.

But my goal, especially in relation to the gospel, isn't sacrifice--it's consecration. Consecration is the law "whereby men and women voluntarily dedicate their time, talents, and material wealth to the establishment and building up of God’s kingdom" (Consecration).

I want to transition my thinking from that of sacrifice, where I expect something in return, to that of consecration. It will probably take me an entire lifetime. Neal A. Maxwell stated simply,
"Consecration is the only surrender which is also a victory" (Settle This in Your Hearts).
