Walking with God

Enoch was "but a lad . . . and slow of speech" when the Lord called him to be his servant (Moses 6:31). Moses asked, "Who am I, that I should go forth unto Pharoah?" (Exodus 3:11). Sometimes I ask, "why would the Lord choose me?"  About our tendency to wait for an invitation to move toward our righteous goals, Elder Uchtdorf says,
"We can sometimes waste years of our life waiting to be chosen. But that is a false premise. We are already chosen!" (The Best Time to Plant a Tree).
Enoch received an incredible promise from the Lord. He was told, "Behold my spirit is upon you . . . Thou shalt abide in me, and I in you; therefore walk with me" (Moses 6:34). Those three words"walk with me"are some of the most powerful in the scriptures.  Just as Christ invited his disciples to "come follow me," we are invited to follow Him and to walk with Him (Matthew 16:24).

We walk with God by making covenants with Him. The Book of Mormon prophet Alma describes the first covenant we make, the covenant of baptism, as "as testimony . . . to serve [God] until you are dead as to the mortal body" (Mosiah 18:13). In return, God promises that "the Spirit of the Lord [will] be poured out upon you; and he may grant you eternal life" (Mosiah 18:13). When the Spirit of the Lord is with you, God is walking with you, helping you to become what he would have you be. One of my favorite scriptures about the power of covenants is in Leviticus. God promises,
"I will establish my covenant with you . . . And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and you will be my people" (Leviticus 26:9,12).
I am so grateful that God has extended to me the opportunity to make covenants. I can feel His hand in my life as I honor those commitments, and I am in awe that the most powerful being in the universe condescends to link himself with me. My covenants grow my faith and give me a chance to show my trust in my Heavenly Father. I also feel motivated to repent daily because I long for the promised blessings. I love His patience with me, his desire to comfort and help me, and that bond is secured by the covenants I've made.

I believe in eternal happiness, and I want all to experience that same miracle.
