1. Start where you are. I always have to acknowledge that I'm not perfect. That can be hard; I'm a perfectionist, and I have been since I discovered quizzes, tests, and papers. Prayer started to feel memorized: I wasn't myself, and honestly, it probably wasn't worth it. God couldn't help me until I acknowledged that I needed His help. When I finally learned the meaning of humility, my prayers improved.
2. Turn your heart toward the Lord. This quote helped me really learn how to pray:
Lift up your soul in prayer and explain to your Heavenly Father what you are feeling. Acknowledge your shortcomings. Pour out your heart and express your gratitude. Let Him know of the trials you are facing. Plead with Him in Christ’s name for strength and support. Ask that your ears may be opened, that you may hear His voice. Ask that your eyes may be opened, that you may see His light. --President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Hope of God's Light
3. Walk in the light. The gospel of Jesus Christ is a beautiful gift. It offers peace, comfort, and clarity. I have learned to love my personal prayers, that time when it is just me and my Heavenly Father. As I pour out my whole soul, I learn and relearn the truth of President Uchtdorf's promise: God "does not wish to break your spirit. On the contrary, He desires that you rise up and become the person you were designed to be." I am so grateful to my Heavenly Father for helping me rise up, and I feel His strengthening hand every time I pray.
This is beautiful. I will think about this when I get ready to pray each day. Thank you.
